EXERCISE 1 : Webtoon Comic

maxresdefault_edited.jpg

For final project exercise 1, we are required to create a webtoon comic and for our batch, the theme of the comic is set as horror. To be honest, I'm a little bit helpless when I knew the theme is fixed as horror at the starting of the semester, as I am a person who don't even watch horror movie and easily get frightened. But since the theme is fixed, I tried my best to come up with a storyline that I can cope with my timid heart.

To start on with this assignment, to fit the theme of horror, and the limitation of my personal issue, I focus much more on what I used to fear of in my childhood which I always imagine what if there is a monster in my room hiding under the bed or cabinet. Other than that, thinking of dark environment, I thought of black cat that can camouflage in dark. And as a cat lover, I can't get over with the mist that I heard before stating that "Black cat bring bad luck, every time they show up there is always something bad happen", to me, cat is one of the animal with high intelligence and spirituality. Hence with all the consideration and spark of idea mentioned above, I created a storyline out of it.

Here is the storyline of my comic, titled as <Devil in the Dark>

In a random full moon night, there is a girl sleeping alone in her room soundly, and suddenly, she feels that there is something coming near to her. She immediately open her eye and she saw a red monster staring at here. Right after, her parents ran towards her room and the girl was pointing to the window direction (She is actually pointing the cabinet but her mom took it wrongly as window) and also there is a black shadow flash by the window. So her mom checked and look outside the window and the mom saw the black cat on the opposite of the street, staring at her house. After this day, little girl often wake up in the middle of the night and scream, it get frequent and slowly, wound can be seen on little girl body. And every time when this happen, the parents can hear the sound of cat fighting in her room and the parents thought that it is the black cat that bring the bad luck and attracted the weird phenomenon to happen to their daughter, even the little girl keep mentioning that it was done by the monster, yet the parents just take it as the monster mentioned by the daughter is the black cat.

At the next full moon night, the black cat again appear and went into the little girl room.... after a few minute, the girl started screaming and crying. This time the parents came prepared and they saw the black cat and when the black cat jumped on to the bed and wanted to attack (the monster in the cabinet), the dad of the girl hit and killed the black cat with a baseball bat. There was a moment of silent right after and the parents comfort the little girl and tell her to not worry "Now the black cat is dead and now all the bad luck and nightmares is gone."

At this moment, a creepy laughing sound greeted them and the devil slowly appear and show up.... The devil then said "THANKS FOR ELIMINATED MY OBSTACLES (black cat)" and "Now, I CAN ENJOY MY MEAL (the little girl, or even, the parents".

Beside telling a horror story, this story also tried to tell people that, don't blame the black cat when unfortune happen. I also ended the comic story with 2 line of word

"A lot people believe that black cat bring bad luck especially when black cat cross their path during their downtime"

"But who knows that black cat might be sent to prevent things getting worst, to be there as your black warrior, protecting you in the dark"

Sketches for

flow of comic

The problem that I faced for exercise 1 is that I am not a person who can draw super super good so I was deciding which styles do I want to proceed with, as I don't have much confident that line drawing can properly tell the story that I wanted to tell and to bring out the feeling. And due to the lack of time also, I need to restrict the amount of panel and to tell the story properly. Beside that, I also have to consider the panel that I have in the webtoon comic, whether are they flexible for me to proceed with the animation after at the same time I also wish to have more interesting interaction from panel to panel. The composition and flow of comic from panel to panel is quite new to me as I don't really read through comic before this.

And the solution I took for the problem mentioned is that, I choose a chalk charcoal-like brush for line drawing at the same time play with the colours of the comic, where it is more towards dark vibes with a hint a colours highlight and shade. The correct brush tool can nicely cover the plain and empty feeling of line drawing at the same time give a little bit of picture story book feeling. And to solve and enhance the panel to panel transition and flow, I references to the example that shown in the lecture slide and also with addition of the reference that I found interesting online, <Montage of Life>. To give a sense of space during the transition of panel to panel to make the comic more interesting.

Reference

And for this project, I first sketched on procreate then moved on with Adobe illustrator app on iPad as it is more handy then only I do a little adjustment on PC version of Ai after exporting the working file.

Experiment on background colour

Even though with white background, it seems to appear to have more comic feeling (like can tell it is a comic to me), but i feel that the flow and feeling appear better by using the darker background and with some gradient at different part. In the end I stick with having the darker background.

EXERCISE 2 : Motion Comic

Requirement : At least 1 minute and Maximum 3 minute (Resolution min. 720)

For animation part, the only issue that I have is only it is very frightening to choose audio effect and when I'm looking for example of the transition of the horror movie, it is really scary. And the fact of running out of time. Other than that is all good as I already planned roughly of how I am going to make the motion comic during sketching out the flow of comic panel.

REFLECTION

Put aside the factor of having very least time that I have to complete this assignment, I really enjoyed this assignment so so much. I'm also happy to produce a horror comic in my way and to tell a story I always wanted to tell. It is new and also challenging to plan out a flow and to make some interaction between the panel but it is so satisfied to see the outcome. And to make the artwork move and carry on the story also another challenge, to use the software. But thought-out this semester, I also slowly get used to those new software especially Adobe Illustrator, it is more handy for me use now. Furthermore, it also make me pay more attention to all the movie, artwork, and even books, how artist make the framing and transition, that now I understand that even a very small details make up the overall experience of the audience.

Special Note for Ms Jennifer and Ms Anis

I would like to thanks both of the lecturer for making this module a really fun one, I have no regret taking up this module as my free elective even though the workload is heavier than some of the module available (module that is easier to achieve to get free A, like introduction to language lol).

All the classes was really well conducted with much patient, love and laugh, with such knowledgeable and attentive lecturer is all I could asked for. Thank you very much Ms Jennifer and Ms Anis (and Ms Anis catto who attend class with us haha), Best wishes and hope to see you in campus!
